Hunters Lament Exclusion from Tackling Bandits in Ogbomoso
Local hunters from Ogbomoso geopolitical zone in Oyo State have expressed their disappointment over being excluded from the state’s new security outfit, saying their involvement is crucial in addressing the rising wave of insecurity in the area.
The hunters, who hail from the five local government areas that make up Ogbomoso zone, noted that recent kidnappings and criminal activities, including the killing of five forest rangers at Old Oyo National Park in Oloka village, underscore the need for their inclusion.
The Oluode of Ogbomoso South Local Government, Chief Adebayo Amos Abiade, condemned the exclusion of his members, stating that local hunters possess the expertise to tackle insecurity in their communities. “In four local governments in Ogbomoso zone, Ogbomoso North and South, Surulere and Ogo-Oluwa, we were not consulted before nominations were made, implying we are not represented, whereas we are the best suited for the job,” he said.
Similarly, the Oluode Soun of Ogbomosoland, Chief Ayobami Akintola, who heads all local hunters in the zone, described the exclusion as unfortunate. “It is unbelievable that people who live for something are not considered for it. We are excluded and we want to express our displeasure,” he said, emphasizing that local hunters have a better knowledge of the terrain and criminal activities in their communities.
The hunters have appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde and the Oyo State House of Assembly to reconsider their position and include them in the security arrangements.
