As the countdown to 2027 intensifies in Oyo State, the political climate is gradually heating up. Among the names gaining momentum in the race to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde is **Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi**, the current Chief of Staff to the Governor, a seasoned lawmaker, and a major political force in the Ogbomoso axis of the state.

Ogunwuyi’s political résumé is robust. He served as a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly between 2011 and 2015, before moving to the House of Representatives where he represented Ogbomoso North, South, and Oriire Federal Constituency from 2015 to 2019. With a strong foundation in legislative processes and governance, he has built considerable political capital over the years.

More importantly, Ogunwuyi is widely regarded as the de facto leader and chief mobilizer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogbomoso. His influence in the region is both strategic and widespread, making him a major stakeholder in the succession conversation.

Since becoming Chief of Staff in Governor Makinde’s second term, he has played a key role in the administration’s policy direction and political cohesion. His proximity to the governor and his reputation as a loyal and discreet operator make him one of the top insiders with real leverage.

Notably, Ogunwuyi has mended many political fences in recent years, reconciling with key players within and outside the PDP. His ability to unify factions, particularly in the Ogbomoso PDP where internal divisions had lingered, positions him as a consensus builder. He also enjoys goodwill and connections beyond Oyo State sources within the PDP confirm that several influential figures at the national level are open to lobbying Governor Makinde on his behalf.

As a proud son of Ogbomoso, his possible candidacy also satisfies the growing agitation for power shift to Oyo North Senatorial District, a zone that many argue deserves a shot at the governorship seat in 2027. If the PDP decides to zone the ticket to the North, Ogunwuyi stands as one of the most experienced and trusted options.

However, his deep ties to the current administration could be a double-edged sword—while it assures continuity, it may also attract opposition from those agitating for total change. But with Makinde’s growing interest in preserving his legacy and ensuring a stable transition, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi remains one of the most serious contenders in the race.

Whether he officially declares or emerges through behind-the-scenes consensus, one thing is certain: the succession train is moving, and Ogunwuyi is firmly on board.
