Adegbite Leads Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence, Rape in Surulere
The wife of the Executive Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Mrs Victoria Adegbite has made a call to end gender-based violence and rape in the local government. Mrs Adegbite made this call when she led representatives of the women leaders drawn across the 10 wards in the local government on a sensitization tour which started in Iresaadu, the local government headquarters and ended in Iresaapa on Friday.
The campaign which sought to make a shift in the mindset of the people against gender-based violence and rape in the society is an annual program which the chairperson has always made it a tradition to take the sensitization tour to different wards each year.
While addressing a group of young men drawn across the ten wards in the local government, Mrs Adegbite said the strength of a man lies not in his ability to hit a woman but his ability not to hit in the face of provocation.
She also made it known that the Surulere Local Government will not condone or treat with levity any report of rape as anyone caught and reported would be made to face the full weight of the law.
In his address, the director of education in Surulere Local Government, Mr Oladapo Kayode said it has become important to sensitize the people on the dangers inherent in gender-based violence and rape as it could lead to loss of lives, incapacitaion, unwanted pregnancy and contraction of STIs. He urged the people of Surulere Local Government to shun and also report anyone found in indulging in such acts.
The campaign team against GBV and rape also paid a courtesy visit to the palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba Olayiwola Ajiboye, the Aresapa of Iresaapa, the royal father also reiterated the call to end gender-based violence and rape in Surulere Local Government. Ọba Ajiboye described it as insulting to the race of a man to hit a woman or have carnal knowledge of a woman against her wish.
He assured the government of Surulere Local Government that he will always provide the needed support to ensure the menace is curbed drastically.
