Over 50% of Africans Lack Access to Adequate Healthcare — WHO; Oyedokun Takes Bold Step in Ogbomoso South

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than half of Africa’s population lacks access to essential healthcare services. In Nigeria, particularly in rural areas across the South-West, the situation is worsened by poor infrastructure and inadequate medical equipment at primary health centres (PHCs).
In a determined effort to address these challenges locally, the Executive Chairman of Ogbomoso South Local Government, Hon. Oyedokun Oyeniyi Timothy (OOT), on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, distributed essential medical equipment to PHCs across the ten wards of the local government.
The event, held at the council secretariat in Arowomole, drew political stakeholders, party leaders, health workers, and community members who commended the gesture as a major boost for grassroots healthcare delivery.
The intervention is part of Hon. Oyedokun’s ongoing commitment to supporting Governor Seyi Makinde’s Omituntun 2.0 agenda, which has healthcare as one of its four core pillars. Governor Makinde had promised to ensure that each of the 351 wards in the state would have at least one Grade 3 Primary Health Centre.
In line with this vision, the Ogbomoso South Local Government under Oyedokun’s leadership, in collaboration with the Oyo State Government, has earlier embarked on the renovation and construction of PHCs across its 10 wards.
Speaking with journalists after the distribution, Hon. Oyedokun said: “Healthcare is one of the four pillars of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration. The Governor promised that each of the 351 wards would have at least one Grade 3 Primary Health Centre.
After the collaboration of Ogbomoso South and the state government on PHCs in our 10 wards, I personally went round to assess what was still lacking. That was when I had to intervene and pay off the medical bills of several residents who couldn’t afford basic treatment—if you remember.
Now, today, we are taking it further by equipping those structures with the right tools so our health workers can serve the people better.”
The medical items distributed include hospital beds, delivery couches, weighing scales, autoclave machines, suction pumps, surgical kits, diagnostic tools, baby care equipment, sanitation materials, and general medical supplies. The goal, according to the chairman, is to reduce the strain on secondary hospitals by ensuring that PHCs can handle common health issues effectively.
Those present at the event included Apostle Olamoyegun Moses, Felix Akande, Taiwo Alagbe, Toyin Olaniran, Oguntoye Michael, Doja Agbejimi, Emmanuel Oladejo, Hon. Idogbe, Taiwo Akano, Engr. De Amusan Damilare, and Dr. Atanda Oluwaseun, alongside several party leaders and stakeholders.
Community members and health workers described the initiative as timely and life-saving. Many expressed hope that the gesture would translate to improved services and quicker response to medical needs at the ward level.
Hon. Oyedokun concluded by reaffirming his administration’s resolve to continue delivering people-oriented projects. “We are just getting started. Health, education, and welfare will remain our priorities in Ogbomoso South,” he said.
