Makinde Releases ₦1 Billion for Gratuities, Death Benefits of Retired LG Workers, Teachers in Oyo

In a continued demonstration of commitment to pensioners’ welfare, the Oyo State Government has released ₦1 billion for the payment of gratuities and death benefits to another batch of retired local government staff and public primary school teachers across the state.

The flag-off ceremony took place at the Mini Hall of the Local Government Staff Training School, Secretariat, Ibadan. Speaking at the event, Hon. Akeem Ademola Ige, Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Staff Pension Board, praised Governor Seyi Makinde for prioritizing the well-being of retirees. He revealed that the monthly allocation for retirement benefits has been increased three times under Governor Makinde—from ₦250 million to ₦500 million, and now to ₦1 billion—aimed at speeding up payment processes and reaching more beneficiaries.

Hon. Ige affirmed that the governor remains committed to clearing all outstanding gratuities and death benefits inherited from past administrations before the end of his tenure in May 2027.

Also speaking, Bashorun Akinwale Solomon Akinwole, Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission, applauded the governor’s visionary leadership, which he said has positively impacted all sectors since 2019.

Alhaji Lukman Akinola Muraina, Permanent Secretary of the Local Government Staff Pension Board, disclosed that a total of ₦1.65 billion was approved for this current phase of payments, benefiting 454 retired workers.

Pension union leaders, including Comrades Muniru Adesope, Dosu Akinpelu, and Hon. Yusuff Temitope, hailed the governor as a “pensioners’ friendly” leader, noting his unwavering support for senior citizens in the state.

Some of the beneficiaries—Mrs. Amoo Caroline Abosede, Mr. Aderinto Ademola, and Mrs. Ogungbade Funmilayo Adejoke—expressed heartfelt appreciation and offered prayers for the governor’s continued success.

Other notable figures present at the event included Pastor Adeola Oduola, Permanent Secretary, Ibadan Zone 1; Comrade Ayodabo Joel, NUP State Trustee 1; Comrade Ricketts Olasupo, State Secretary, Retired LG Staff Wing; Comrade Tunji Ogunwale, State Secretary, Retired Primary School Teachers Wing; as well as various NUP branch chairmen and departmental heads.
