Celebrating Nigeria’s Democracy Day: A Call to Renew Our Commitment
On June 12, Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, a symbolic moment to reflect on the resilience, struggles, and aspirations of a nation that has long fought for the right to self-determination, representative governance, and civic inclusion.
This date is more than a historical marker. It is a tribute to the democratic spirit that triumphed against military rule, embodied most notably in the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. The late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, presumed winner of that election, became an enduring symbol of the people’s will—silenced but never forgotten. Democracy Day is thus both a celebration and a solemn remembrance of the price paid for the freedoms we enjoy today.
Over the past two and a half decades, Nigeria has witnessed the peaceful transfer of power, the rise of a vibrant civil society, and increasing political participation. Yet, we must admit that democracy is still a work in progress. Issues like electoral violence, corruption, voter apathy, and weakened institutions continue to challenge the ideals we honor today.
Celebrating Democracy Day should not end with ceremonial speeches or parades. It must be a call to action. A call to deepen civic education, to hold leaders accountable, and to participate actively in the democratic process by joining a political party—not just during elections but every day. It is a day for every Nigerian—regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation—to reaffirm their role in shaping a just, equitable, and prosperous society.
As we raise our flags and sing our anthems, let us remember that democracy thrives not by default, but by deliberate effort. It is not only about government by the people, but about government for the people—one that upholds dignity, justice, and opportunity for all.
Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria. Let us celebrate with purpose—and move forward with unity.
