Amotekun to be put on hold, we are heading to court – Hon Karounwi

Special Envoy on regional matters to Ekiti State governor and southwest publicity secretary of the All Progressives’ Congress,APC, Hon Karounwi Oladapo has revealed that Operation Amotekun might be put on hold following Attorney General legal opinion.

Hon Karounwi maintained that the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation is not the court of law; so the attorney general’s office is not meant to interpret the law, but only to express legal opinion.

“As far as I am concerned, the attorney general is only expressing a legal opinion, because I have the right to say the position of the attorney general is equally illegal. Now the only institution that will now say who is right or wrong is the court”.

He disclosed that Southwest as a law abiding region, will approach the court and halt the security network pending the ruling of a law court.

“Well, southwest is not a lawless region, you know the Attorney General of the federation speaks for the President; he is the legal voice of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Southwest is a law-abiding region, we cannot be confronting the authority of the federal government, so when you have two divergent legal opinions, the next thing is that you will want to know where the truth resides and the only way to do that is that you approach the law court”.

“Then if the court now says the position of the AGF is right, then that rests the matter and if the court says, Attorney General, you are wrong then we will continue our operation from where it was before the declaration of the AGF”.

“What I am saying is that the activities of the outlet are expected to be temporarily put on hold, so as not to be seen as engaging the authority of Nigeria. Because we are civilized in the southwest and the civilized way to go about this is to challenge the position of the Attorney General in court, which is the only legal authority that can say boldly who is right or wrong. So the only civilized way goes now is to stop temporarily the operation of the outlet so as not to be seen as flexing muscle with the authority. The Yorubas have always been known to civilize; we will not be boxed into a corner”.
